Ethics: What makes an action “moral”?

What makes an action “moral”?

We are sometimes faced with certain situations that don’t seem very moral to us. The level of morality is then set by society and the community. This varies with different cultures and how people respond to nature and other humans. An action is moral when you feel you have done something good of yourself and another being, mostly for the other being. When something is truly benefiting something for the greater good then i think it is a morally right thing or action. When you are moral, it shows that you care, you are concerned with how things will turn out and that already categorized you as doing something for the better or for some kind of benefit. For example if there is a person starving on the street and you give them a home to stay in and a warm meal everyday then you are doing something for the greater good. This could also benefit yourself because you could feel good about your good deed. But if something is done for selfish reasons like wanting to be praised in a community then i think the action would still be moral because you are making someone life better but you are doing it for the wrong reasons. Selfishness can be confused with being moral and doing something for the greater good.

  1. Right, the difference between a moral person and an ethical person is that the moral person seeks the best good for everyone, while the ethical person seeks to follow the rules. Hopefully, most of the time, these would coincide. But it takes caring for others to end bad rules (like slavery) and replace them with better rules (like prohibiting slavery).

Kant said that there is only one virtue which is good in and of itself, and that is a good will. All other virtues, like bravery for example, could be used for good or evil ends.

And in Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus says that loving God (loving Good for humanists) and loving your neighbor are the two principles that all other rules serve.
